when heaven comes down (2003)

JOE KING has a new album in the works, "When Heaven Comes Down".Produced by Richard Lacy of Eden's Bridge, it draws heavily on folk influences. The theme of the album is one of yearning for God to"touch and change our society with His healing love and power." (For those who have been watching, Joe's website is functional again.)

JOE KING : When Heaven Comes Down.
Gaining and NFN "Album of the Month" award for his last release, Joe was on a hiding to nothing with his follow up. And, while this new release never quite reaches the same dizzy heights of "Eye of the Storm", it's still a good album. Joe says that the central theme of the album is one of yearning for God to touch and change our society with His healing love and power. Certainly, the lyrics of all the songs do convey that feeling. The more progressive opening number told me straight away that this wasn't simply just another album, rather, one that's been prayed about, over and over again. Joe has a great voice and I love it when it's in full flow, like on "This Is What I Love About You". There's a few more quieter songs this time round and mid-album "At the Cross" and "To Be Touched By Jesus" show Joe in meditative thought, while "At the Cross" falls a little flat. "Fresh Fire" asks for a personal renewal, and the 9 minute "God Of Love…" gives a full sense of being one with the Lord. 8/10. (February 2004)

'eye of the storm' (2002)

This worship album reflects my Celtic / Irish roots, with musicians drawn from Iona and Eden's Bridge. It gathers together various strands of the work at present:

The Storms of Life: God's aim in allowing us to go through storms is that we come out stronger than when we went in. He's making us into overcomers by giving us things to overcome. Storms nourish courage. If we want comfort we'll never learn to be courageous. Courage is formed in times of warfare not welfare. Basically, we need the very storms from which we want to run.
Worship: Storms provoke a dependency on God. They peel away our concept relationship with Him. We stop living on second-hand spiritual credit cards and borrowed convictions and discover God really is our 'big dad'. We are enjoyed by Him and He wants us to be His problem. The strength of the anchor is found in the storm.

Healing: God never works through us until He has worked in us. It's been mostly in my times of brokenness that God has done some amazing physical healings such as epilepsy, osteoporosis, deafness, asthma, kidney stones and many others. Be assured, God likes using broken things. I long for the church to realise that healing is part of the Great Commission. Jesus told us to pray that God's will would be done on earth as it is in heaven - and there's no sickness in heaven!

Revival: God wants to bring a Great Awakening across this nation. Before that can happen there will be many storms, both in and outside the church because revival means upheaval.

JOE KING : Eye of the Storm.
This worship album reflects Joe's Celtic/Irish roots, with musicians drawn from Iona and Eden's Bridge. However, I think that he's also been listening to some good old 60's & 70's pop, as several songs have that uncluttered, yet still stylish, feel about them. Take, for instance, "The Wonder" and "Still, I'm Trusting". both have been carefully crafted and have that perfect warmth from the finished song. Joe's healing ministry has seen him travel the length and breadth of the country and the song "There Is Healing" is the perfect vehicle to carry the message of God's healing powers. "Lord of All Creation" is uncomplicated, yet draws the listener into the wonderment of God's creation with ease. I loved the sounds of the pipes on "Follow You - a really joyous song with a little Celtic reel thrown in for good measure too. "Eye of the Storm" contains so many songs that had me really thanking God for all the goodness He has poured into my life, despite some sorrow, and not many albums do that so completely. Well done, Joe, this is superb. 10/10. (February 2002, Album of the Month)

'the harvest has begun' (1997)

CROSS RHYTHMS MAGAZINE: Joe is such a great writer … There is so much good music here … These songs are a dose of reality which act as a healing balm a powerful recording from one of Britain's great underrated songwriting talents. Courtesy of Mike Rimmer
NEW CHRISTIAN HERALD: …this man's writing talents shouldn't be underrated. …a fine batch of gentle, tender ballads and elsewhere there are full-blown rock treatments … and the boys from 'Iona' certainly make for some great backing. Ultimately though it's the songs that count. Courtesy of Peter Dilley
JOY MAGAZINE: Joe King … a singer/songwriter of considerable talent. His songs are mostly quite intense and deeply personal but always positive … of excellent quality … excellent recording and arranging … an album you'll find helpful during difficult times in particular.
KINGSWAY'S WORSHIP CONNECTION: There is no doubt Joe's ministry in song will continue to change many lives … contemporary praise and worship from the powerful 'When Jesus Comes Again' to the intimate 'Father'.

When you receive an album produced by UK's Chris Eaton you know you're handling something special. As well as writing and recording several solo albums, Chris has penned songs for the likes of Amy Grant and Cliff Richard, as well as masterfully producing five out of six of Ian White's gorgeous Psalms offerings plus a host of other ventures besides.
Joe King is a singer/songsmith from North England with a previous solo album, 'Next to You' to his name. Here he offers a collection of his own tunes, most fitting into the pop/inspirational category, though there are some wonderful hints of rock-guitar here and there, courtesy of one Morph! Joe's warm and passionate voice works well as he encourages the listener in his/her Christian walk with songs like the Celtic-inspired 'Stand your ground' and 'Thief in the night'. More intimate moments surface again and again with the likes of 'Until our hearts beat as one' and the delicate 'I still believe in You'. Indeed these reflective occasions see Joe at his best; open, sensitive and full of encouragement. Other notable musicians appearing include the ubiquitous(!) Teryl Bryant on drums and Mike Horton with his sax touch (hear his gorgeous accompaniment to 'Don't give up the fight'). As well as this we have Rob Maxwell's fine violin strokes providing opening elegance to the flowing story-in-song 'Justin Brown'.

The album closes with a fitting upbeat song of praise 'Jesus, You are Mighty' containing an infectious country feel. "The Harvest Has Begun" is a worthy follow-up to Joe's previous output and indeed an album to be proud of.

Review by tom lennie

JOE KING : The Harvest Has Begun.
You know when Joe King writes a song, that it's something very personal that he wants to share. After the success of his previous release "Next To You", and the theme of God putting strength into all through difficulties, this one is long awaited. With Chris Eaton at the helm of the controls, the result is a more polished affair yet with nothing taken away from Joe's intimate gifts. Beginning with the catchy "When Jesus Comes Again" and continuing with the title track, you hear the professional touch of Mr Eaton adding a certain something to what could have been ordinary songs. The acoustic "Until Our Heart Beats..." is a poignant number of great value and "Father"'s lucidity is just sheer honesty. Pipes, whistles, and more, get you jigging to "Stand Your Ground", and the effective drums on "Let My Power" give Joe's writing yet another angle. Overalll, it's a good album, but I've a deep feeling that the next will be even better. 9/10. (March 1998)

'next to you' (1994)

ALPHA MAGAZINE: Songs of this quality are rare and deserve the widest possible audience… If his record company had an ounce of sense, they'd mail it to the offices of major American Christian artists. Courtesy of Dave Roberts
CROSS RHYTHMS: I can't remember any album with such immediate melodies as this. The songs are all really good. A fine album. Courtesy of Robin Budgel
PREMIER MAGAZINE: This unique album is a work of prophecy, communicating the heart of God towards His people and a suffering world. (ALBUM OF THE MONTH)
PIONEER MAGAZINE: …a delicious mix of songs. One record producer said he was sent loads of cassettes, but when this one came he had to stop and listen to it.
ALLIANCE DIRECT: Alliance and Joe received more letters from people who had been helped and blessed by this recording than any other in the last six years.
